Hyperbolic Cooling Towers - Somerset (Brayton Point), Mass.
CLIENT
Dominion Virginia Power
Ibberson was a joint venture partner for this Environmental Protection Agency mandated project to convert the Brayton Point Station in Somerset, Massachusetts, from an open cooling system to a closed loop cooling system.
The cooling tower construction contains over 3,900 cubic yards of concrete and 488,000 pounds of reinforcing steel. Each cooling tower is 500 feet tall and approximately 370 feet wide at the bottom with concrete walls 20 inches thick. The cooling tower’s varying shape required flexible formwork for the changing diameters of the tower.
The four 4,900-horsepower pumps can drive 360,000 gallons of water per minute into each of the towers.
