General Mills’ existing cake, brownie and muffin mix facility in Toledo was slated for a major expansion that would make it, per their sources, the largest dessert mix facility in the world.
Ibberson’s responsibility in the 19,928-square-foot expansion was handling the process design, equipment, procurement, and process equipment layout.
The client’s goal was to consolidate mixing lines from various plants with the four large new blenders that would be added in the expansion. In this way, there would be a significant reduction in capital cost to produce a case of mix, while increasing production by approximately 30 percent.
Ibberson played an instrumental role in the project due to previous experience designing the first such large-scale blending system for GMI at another of their plants. Our numerous innovations in the process, which cannot be detailed due to a confidentiality agreement, ultimately reduced capital costs while meeting the projects aggressive reduced case-cost projections and improved quality control.
